Hearing On Toll Hikes Spurs A Squabble
Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-W. Va.) said he was “troubled” by Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Deputy Executive Director Bill Baroni’s refusal to answer questions at an April 18 hearing on tolling accountability.
The hearing is part of the Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation’s work on a bill to restore the Department of Transportation’s ability to determine fairness of toll hikes and to give the DOT authority to prescribe more reasonable tolls. Jay said Baroni displayed “inappropriate discourse and decorum” when questioned by the subcommittee’s chairman, Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J).

FMCSA To Study Heavy Vehicle Violations
In an effort to better understand the safety performance of heavier vehicles, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Federal Highway Administration are partnering to implement the Specialized Heavy Vehicle Inspection Study Cooperative Agreement that will provide funding to state agencies responsible for large truck roadside safety inspections.

FMCSA OKs Window Tinting
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has confirmed to the International Window Film Association that window tinting is permitted on commercial motor vehicles.
In a Sept. 26 letter to FMCSA, the IWFA said “historically, the enforcement community and the trucking industry have clearly taken the position that ‘no’ film was allowed on any vehicle operated as a commercial vehicle.” The agency responded that such enforcement would have been done contrary to regulations. It also had published guidance that said trucks can use “clear” window films as long as at least 70 percent of the normal light is transmitted.

The Bendix ESP full-stability system with Automatic Traction Control becomes standard equipment in May 2012 on most Peterbilt Motors Company’s heavy-duty trucks and tractors.
The Bendix ESP full stability system works in conjunction with Anti-lock Braking Systems to maintain vehicle stability and help mitigate rollovers, jackknifing and loss-of-control situations by selectively applying brakes when excessive wheel slip or a critical stability threshold is compromised.
