Trucking Must Move Now To Change Image
If it wants to continue to improve its public image, the trucking industry must become a “yes” industry, the chairman of the Truckload Carriers Association said Monday.
“We must start becoming an association and industry of yes,” TCA Chairman Gary Salisbury told delegates at the opening session of the organization’s annual meeting. “We can’t say ‘no,’ that’s not going to work.” If it wants to create a positive public image, the industry has to be proactive, whether it’s in the area of Hours of Service, electronic onboard recorders (EOBRs) or independent contractor issues, Salisbury, president and CEO of Fikes Truck Line at Hope, Ark., said.

The New Economics Of Oil
Via Brad Plumer comes a Citigroup research note arguing that the Peak Oil thesis is dying right now in North Dakota where shale oil production is surging.
I’m not sure I buy that, but it’s unambiguously true that the short-term supply situation now looks different than what we’ve come to expect in recent years. Recall that for a while we had the OPEC paradigm under which Saudi Arabia had oil that was cheap to extract but that it would hold off the market in order to boost the price.

Amendment Defeats Heavier Trucks
Raising truck weight limits on U.S. highways has been put off for the time being.
A bipartisan amendment to require a study of the impact of heavier truck weight limits was approved today, Feb. 2, as debate opened on the $260 billion American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act (H.R. 7). The amendment by Reps. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.) and Jerry Costello (D-Ill.) passed on a 33-20 vote.
