Requirements to Become a Truck Driver in California

When it comes to the truck driving industry, making sure that every truck driver is equipped with the proper training and guidance before they are handed the keys – and their license – is extremely important. That’s why across the nation, but specifically in California, there are several necessary requirements every truck driver must meet before they hit the open road. To help navigate these requirements, we at America Truck Driving School have compiled a list of just a few of them.

Basic Eligibility
To begin pursuing your California Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), you will need to meet the following requirements:

• Possess a high school diploma or GED
• Preserve a good driving record
• Have a Class D license for at least 1 year and in good standing
• Be at least 18 years old to drive in-state, 21 to drive state-to-state
• Possess proof of California residency
• Possess a social security card
• Be able to show proof of insurance
• Pass a 10-year background check
• Pass TSA screening
• Pass a medical examination
• Pass periodic drug tests

Required Tests
To receive your commercial driver’s license, you will need to pass both knowledge and skill tests. The knowledge test examines your knowledge of the road and safety rules for your vehicle class. Once students pass this portion, they can then start prepping for the skills test, which generally looks for competency in three areas: vehicle inspection, vehicle control and operation, and road driving.
