Start your professional truck driving career with confidence! At America Truck Driving School, we’re your trusted partner in helping you obtain your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in California. Our clear, step-by-step guidance ensures you’re fully prepared—whether you’re aiming for intrastate or interstate driving.
Step 1: Meet Basic Eligibility Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old for in-state (intrastate) driving, or 21+ for interstate commerce or handling hazardous materials.
- Hold a valid California driver’s license, maintain a clean driving record, and provide proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful residency.
- Pass a DOT medical exam, valid every two years, from an FMCSA-certified provider.
- Complete a 10-year background check, provide a Social Security Number, and pass any necessary drug or TSA screenings for certain endorsements.
Step 2: Obtain Your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)
- Study the California CDL Handbook and take the required knowledge tests—typically including General Knowledge, Class-A or B, and Air Brakes, depending on the desired license class.
- Visit your local DMV, submit identity and residency documents, pass the vision test, complete the medical exam, and pay application fees.
- Hold your CLP for at least 14 days before you can schedule and take your CDL skills test.
Step 3: Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)
- ELDT is mandatory as per federal law and must be completed through a registered training provider.
- Training includes both classroom (knowledge) and behind-the-wheel (BTW) instruction—California requires at least 15 hours of BTW training with certification for original CDLs.
- At America Truck Driving School, you’ll benefit from expert instructors, flexible schedules, hands-on yard and on-road training, plus support preparing for your skills test.
Step 4: Schedule & Pass the DMV Skills Test
- After completing training, schedule your skills test with the DMV or a third-party tester. The test includes pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving.
- You have three attempts to pass; each retake may require a fee.
Step 5: Receive Your CDL & Launch Your Career
- Upon passing the skills test and paying licensing fees, you’ll receive your Class A or B CDL and be ready to drive professionally.
- Many of our graduates are pre-hired by carriers during training. Expect continued mentoring, advanced training, and rewarding job placements as you begin your career on the road.
