    Healthy Habits Every Truck Driver Should Practice

    Whether you’ve just begun your truck driving career or consider yourself to be a veteran, your health should be a top priority. This means eating healthy meals and snacks every day, and adopting habits that will keep you physically strong and mentally alert. Here are a few tips for truckers to keep themselves in great shape.

    1. Stay hydrated

    Dehydration may seem like a minor issue, but in fact it is the catalyst for many health issues. However, the body doesn’t give signs it’s time to drink until it has already reached a level of dehydration. The best way to avoid dehydration is to sip water all day long and avoid caffeinated beverages. Be sure to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water every day.

    2. Prioritize fruits and vegetables

    Your mother was right, fruits and vegetables should be included in every meal of the day. Raw fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber and help you feel full faster. They also contain vital minerals and nutrients that will help you feel energized and alert throughout the day. However, don’t eat too much fruit as it is a significant source of sugar. If the thought of eating fruits and vegetables doesn’t appeal to you, consider making a smoothie or shake that you can change up day to day.

    3. Avoid energy drinks

    Coffee, black tea, sodas, and energy drinks may give you a much-needed energy boost, but they also come at a cost — dehydration. If you must drink coffee, be sure to increase the amount of water you drink to prevent dehydration.

    4. Pay attention to portion size

    Eating large meals will cause you to feel drowsy because the body is using significant energy to process and metabolize the food. Eating smaller portions or snacking will keep you feeling full and energized.

    5. Start drinking smoothies

    Pack frozen fruits, a good quality nut milk, and a small blender to create smoothies when out on the road. Smoothies will help you limit snacking and reduce your craving for sweets and caffeine.

    6. Practice good sleep hygiene

    Before going to sleep, avoid TV, digital screens, and habits that make it difficult to relax. Make an effort to slow down mentally and physically before going to bed.

    7. Take a daily walk

    Just because you’re driving all day doesn’t mean you can’t take a brief walk around a truck stop or down the street during delivery. Doing so will give you a vitamin D boost and support healthy sleep patterns.
