    After you’ve been on the road for hours, a stop at the gas station usually involves perusing the shelves of the convenience store for a quick snack. But what’s readily available isn’t usually very healthy. So if you’re looking for more nutritious options, here are a few snacks to munch on instead of chips and energy drinks.

    Unsalted trail mix

    Purchase your trail mix at the grocery store in the bulk section, rather than in packages. You’ll be reducing waste and increasing your savings. It’s easy to overindulge in salty snacks, so go for unsalted to help you with portion control. 

    Low-sodium jerky

    Beef and turkey jerky are high in protein and are filling snacks when you’re in a rush to get back out on the road. Go for low-sodium and low-sugar brands to keep the snack healthy and nutritious.

    Fruit (and fruit juice)

    Go for fresh fruit and avoid the processed dried fruit. Choose juice without added sugars or preservatives. Fruit juice is a great substitute for energy drinks high in sugar and low on nutrition.

    String cheese

    String cheese is a good source of protein and calcium. Choose reduced-fat and store them in the cooler for easy access


    Go for Greek or Icelandic yogurt to get the maximum calcium, protein and probiotic bacteria. Add in fresh fruit and granola for a filling mid-day snack.

    Energy bar

    With dozens of energy bar brands out there, it can be hard to find the healthy ones. Check the nutrition facts and ingredient label to rule out bars high in sugar and full of ingredients you can’t pronounce.

    Fruit smoothie

    If you don’t have a blender in your truck, consider getting one to create your own fruit smoothies. Buy frozen fruit and non-dairy milk for a vitamin-packed snack that’s as delicious as it is healthy. 

    Kale and bean chips

    If you have an addiction to potato chips, kale and bean chips are a healthier alternative. They’re nutrient dense, crunchy and have fewer carbs than potato chips. And — they’re just as tasty.
