5 Tips For Truck Driver Safety

When you’re living the dream, safety is usually the last thing on your mind. But for truck drivers, safety should be taken seriously — not only for their sakes, but also for the safety of other drivers. Here are five tips for staying safe on the road as a truck driver.

    • Glance back at your truck after parking.

A common pet peeve of most drivers is when a vehicle has a blinker on for miles without making the slightest visible attempt of making a lane change. This is confusing for every driver around them. When getting out of a truck, it’s pretty easy to accidentally hit the blinker. That’s why it’s necessary to look back at the truck after parking.

    • Don’t forget the pre-trip inspection.

There will be times when you’re facing a tight delivery appointment and you’re desperately trying to figure out how best to plan your trip. One corner that cannot EVER be cut in planning a trip, is the pre-trip inspection. The last thing you want on any trip is a DOT officer asking if you’ve completed a pre-trip inspection.

    • Watch the tire path.

When you’re trying to park, look out for the tire path of the truck that just pulled out of the spot. If you can’t see it from inside the truck, take the time to get out and find it. This will save you time and the hassle of trying to figure out how to fit in that tight spot.

    • Be aware of the trailer.

When you’re driving an 18-wheeler, you’re not just driving the truck — you’re driving the trailer, too. That means you have to stay aware of lane lines and make sure the trailer is staying within the lane.

    • Swerving for an animal is not worth the risk.

We love animals as much as any animal lover. But for truck drivers, it’s important to consider the risks of swerving for an animal. Swerving 80,000 pounds of cargo for a dog, deer or alligator is just not worth the risks to yourself and other drivers on the road.
