4 Ways to Winterize Your Truck

Winter can be one of the toughest times of year for any truck driver, especially those who are driving routes in areas that get a lot of rain, ice or snow. You have to be prepared for any weather situation to keep yourself and other drivers on the road safe this time of year.

As for taking care of your truck, here are four helpful tips from us at America Truck Driving School to keep your vehicle winterized and ready to face this winter season:

    1. Install New Wiper Blades
The weather across the nation can vary in severity during the winter season. Even if you don’t think your wiper blades are due for a change, it’s always a good idea to replace them at the beginning of the winter season for maximum performance and visibility in the harshest of weather.
    2. Use Weather Performance Products
Use a seal protector to put over the door, window, and other seals to keep them from freezing shut. Use a window treatment to help with visibility and a defroster for frozen locks. There are so many great products out there that will help with vehicle performance and safety during the winter months.
    3. Always Keep Spare Fluids in the Truck
Of course, you should check your fluids and tire pressure before heading out each day, but also be sure to keep spare fluids and an air hose with you at all times. Elevation and severe temperature changes can dramatically affect fluid levels and air pressures, so it’s best to be prepared.
    4. Pack an Emergency Kit
Prepare a bag to carry with you at all times that includes basic safety items such as a flashlight, batteries, charging cords, gloves, jumper cables, and duct tape. Be sure to also pack survival items like water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit, important documents and anything else you will need in case of emergency.

A truck driver’s job is important. Many businesses and individuals depend on the job being done well and on time. However, your safety and the safety of other drivers on the road always takes precedence over deadlines. So, when driving through harsh winter weather, follow all safety protocol, and follow your best judgment.
