How to Become a Truck Driver
Truck driving is a stable and in-demand career that can give drivers a steady source of income and the opportunity to travel. If you’re considering a career in truck driving, here’s what you need to do to get started.
1. Find out if you’re eligible.
You must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible to take the CDL exam. But you will need to be at least 21 to operate a commercial vehicle across state lines.
You will also need a physical and DOT medical card from an examiner listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s national registry.
To prove identity and state of residency when applying for a CDL, you’ll need to provide a Social Security number, birth certificate, driver’s license, utility bill, and/or copy of MVR.
You should also make sure you don’t have any of the following medical conditions:
- Sleep apnea
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Physical handicaps, such as missing fingers, toes, or limbs
Some individuals may be able to obtain a written waiver from a physician stating their condition doesn’t prevent them from safely operating a commercial vehicle.
CDL candidates should not have a history of serious criminal offenses and felony convictions.
2. Enroll in truck driving school.
America Truck Driving School has helped thousands of drivers begin a career in trucking. We offer classroom and private instruction to ensure each student is fully prepared to take the CDL exam. Give us a call to learn more about our programs.
3. Study the CDL manual.
Once you’ve completed truck driving school, take the time to study your state’s CDL manual. You can pick up a hard-copy at the DMV or download the manual online from their website.
4. Complete a CDL learner’s permit application.
The next step is to complete the online application and pay the fee. Consider doing this while you’re attending truck driving school, that way you’re ready to take the behind-the-wheel exam once you’re done with the program.
5. Take the CDL tests.
The CDL exam typically includes a written portion and a behind-the-wheel test. Your instructors at America Truck Driving School will teach you all you need to know to pass these tests with flying colors.
6. Apply for a truck driving job.
Now that you have a CDL, you’re ready to look for job opportunities. We’re in a healthy job market, with many trucking companies looking for qualified candidates. Good luck and enjoy the ride!
