Volvo Hybrid Truck Goes For Speed
Volvo Trucks is taking hybrid technology to the next level in high-speed/high-performance racing.
Volvo is showing the modified Mean Green hybrid VN race truck at a truck show in Louisville, Ky. The truck is a combination test bed/demonstration truck that is intended to show that in addition to improved fuel economy and reduction in greenhouse gas exhaust emissions, hybrid technology offers greater vehicle performance.

DOT Pegs Highway Spending At $101B Annually
The U.S. Department of Transportation March 16 announced a new report on the state of America’s transportation infrastructure points to a sizable gap between current spending and projected levels of investment needed to maintain the nation’s highway and transit systems.
DOT’s report, “2010 Status of the Nation’s Highways, Bridges and Transit: Conditions and Performance,” projects that $101 billion, plus increases for inflation, would be needed annually over the next 20 years from all levels of government – local, state and federal – to keep the highway system in its current state. It also identifies investments to improve the current state of highways and bridges that could total up to $170 billion a year.

EPA Underestimated Costs Of Emissions Controls
The National Automobile Dealers Association and American Truck Dealers have released a new report that calls into question the Environmental Protection Agency’s cost analysis of emissions control requirements for model year 2004-2010 commercial trucks. The mandates resulted in substantially higher prices for commercial vehicles, depressed sales, and delayed the environmental benefits that the EPA originally sought, the report says.

Trucking Must Move Now To Change Image
If it wants to continue to improve its public image, the trucking industry must become a “yes” industry, the chairman of the Truckload Carriers Association said Monday.
“We must start becoming an association and industry of yes,” TCA Chairman Gary Salisbury told delegates at the opening session of the organization’s annual meeting. “We can’t say ‘no,’ that’s not going to work.” If it wants to create a positive public image, the industry has to be proactive, whether it’s in the area of Hours of Service, electronic onboard recorders (EOBRs) or independent contractor issues, Salisbury, president and CEO of Fikes Truck Line at Hope, Ark., said.
